One of my closest friends turns 30 this Tuesday (happy birthday, D!) and so her husband put together a surprise party for her tonight at a local bowling alley. I love any opportunity to bake and decorate cupcakes and so I offered to make some for this event. If you’re not in the habit of decorating your own cupcakes, I highly recommend it. It’s something I’ve really grown to love doing in the last couple of years. I thought I’d share my first ever semi-tutorial.
What you’ll need if you want to replicate this:
A 10 inch Wilton decorating bag (in a pinch I’ve cut the bottom right hand corner off of a gallon sized Zip Lock bag and it works just fine).
A 2D Wilton decorating tip.
your favorite cupcake recipe & frosting recipe (Mine were french vanilla cupcakes with a whipped buttercream frosting).
Wilton colors (I used orange, purple, and both blue and green).
Cake Mate Cupcake Gems (I used “Shimmer Silver).
There’s really no perfect science to coloring frosting when it comes to decorating. I start out by putting just a little bit and then add to create the desired look. I did this in three rounds: orange, purple, and then I mixed together the royal blue and the green to make the turquoise color you’ll see below.
Insert the decorating tip into the bag and push about half way out of the hole in the bottom. Then fill the bag about half way with the frosting and twist the top of the bag. You’ll want to hold the bag just above the twist when you decorate so nothing comes out of the top. I twisted the cupcake around and frosted it starting from the outside of the cupcake working my way in towards the center. Immediately after I frosted them, I sprinkled the Cake Mate gems onto the cupcakes.
